BEAVERDAM, OHIO (WLIO) - The village of Beaverdam helped preserve the sacrifice of some veterans buried in the same cemetery as the village founders.

Beaverdam dedicates a new monument for veterans buried at their cemetery

The idea all started when the Bluffton American Legion was placing flags on the graves for Memorial Day, and they were not sure who was all buried in the cemetery with the aging or missing tombstones.

It has been a year and a half-long project to get a monument built at the cemetery on East Main Street. The idea all started when the Bluffton American Legion was placing flags on the graves for Memorial Day, and they were not sure who was all buried in the cemetery with the aging or missing tombstones. So, after a bunch of research, the village has a lasting memorial built to honor 34 soldiers from the Beaverdam area that served their country.

“The Beaverdam Council and the Beaverdam Veterans have been trying to get a monument here, and we have been working to find out who all the veterans were, from the War of 1812 to World War 1. We finally came, and we were able to get this monument together to honor these veterans,” says Gary Crawfis.

Besides dedicating the monument to the veterans, there was recognition of the POW and MIA soldiers that did not come home.
