“They were very shocked to come across that, you know, you always know in the back your head that, hey, this was originally a cemetery. They say there’s still at least one person buried here, but you don’t think that they’re actually gonna find something when you’re just trying to dig up to put a new fuel, fuel pump. It was kind of exciting. It was, it was just very neat atmosphere. Just, you know, kind of seeing a piece of history unfold before you there,” said Teresa Brown, RTA finance manager.

July 1, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Department of Commerce: COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Real Estate and Professional licensing invites eligible nonprofit cemeteries throughout the state to submit applications to receive funding for cemetery projects during fiscal year 2025 through the Cemetery Grant Program. The application window opened July 1, and applications will be accepted through July 31, 2024. During this grant cycle, $104,000 in funding is available to assist eligible Ohio cemeteries with costs related to upkeep and other exceptional operational expenses.

A local event is being held on Saturday, December 17 in Ottawa at the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery located at 867 West Main Street. The ceremony begins at noon with wreath-laying following a short talk, a 21-gun salute, and TAPS. Names of veterans buried at the cemetery will be read while family, friends, and community place wreaths at more than 421 gravesites. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in this special event.
Running through a cemetery around this spooky time of year can mean just one thing, it is time for the annual Howl’oween Trick or Trot. This is the 4th year that the Lima Kiwanis Club has put on the event that features a 5k race, a one mile fun run and virtual pet contest. There were around 150 runners and walkers signed up for the run that takes them from Faurot Park through Woodlawn Cemetery and back. The Kiwanis club oversees many youth clubs in Lima City School and Heir Force Academy, plus a club at Ohio State Lima. The money raised from the Trick or Trot, goes to further their mission to teach those students community services and leadership skills.
A cause of death has not been identified, with investigators waiting on a toxicology report following an autopsy. They do say that Hernandez did not die at the scene, and they need answers as to where and why he died. They also want to find out who placed him at the cemetery. Anyone with information that might assist investigators is asked to contact the Paulding County Sheriff's Office or leave an anonymous tip on their website.
Wreaths Across America held an event in Ottawa in order to honor the veterans that made the ultimate sacrifice. Military families as well as the Ottawa community came together in order to lay wreaths on the graves of veterans at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery.
