ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - It's the season of giving and receiving, but it's not so welcome when the topic is the cold or flu.

Health Department: Don't gift your cold or flu to others this holiday season

"The best advice that we have if you are feeling sick and you have a holiday gathering coming up, just stay home and rest."

Before getting together with friends and family for the holiday, people may want to be on the lookout to make sure no one is sick. To prevent catching any illness, experts say it only takes one easy step. Wash your hands for 20 seconds, then use a paper towel to turn off the water. And if you're not feeling the best, stop and think: Is it really worth getting a loved one sick?

"The best advice that we have if you are feeling sick and you have a holiday gathering coming up, just stay home and rest. If you are around others, it is good to frequently wash your hands, use hand sanitizer so you can prevent any disease that you can pick up by touching surfaces and putting it up to your mouth and limit the ability for that disease to get into your system," says Brandon Fischer, Allen County Public Health Commissioner.

Fischer says it is not too late to get your flu or Covid vaccine, which will help reduce the severity of the virus if you get sick in the future.
