Lima SABRES "Women on Target" event provides safe range experience to first-time shooters

The Lima SABRES Shooting Association hosted Women on Target, a low-cost event to give ladies a chance to learn how to handle guns in a safe, friendly setting.

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Around 60 Lima women took a shot at something new on Sunday.

The Lima SABRES Shooting Association hosted Women on Target, a low-cost event to give ladies a chance to learn how to handle guns in a safe, friendly setting. Every sharpshooter had one-on-one guidance from an instructor as they tried out handguns, shotguns, and rifles.

The twice-annual event hopes to disprove any misconceptions women might have about guns, like that their hands are too small or they aren't strong enough to accurately fire one. Many women participating had never touched a firearm before, but all had a good time and even got some bullseyes.

Some of their advice includes treating every gun like it's loaded and never forgetting to use hearing and eye protection.

"They love it. They get to take their targets home with them and everything, and they come in like, 'Look how good I did!' Really surprised them. We started a new thing with the steel challenge here for the women. They love that because they hear the ping when the bullets are striking the steel, and they just love that," said Sheri Markley, the Lima SABRES Director of Special Events.

The instructors spent the day preaching safety above all else. Some of their advice includes treating every gun like it's loaded and never forgetting to use hearing and eye protection.
