LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Symphony Orchestra got kids interested in music with some familiar tunes.
The annual Family Concert: Superheroes and Supervillains featured scores from film series like Batman, Star Wars, and Cruella de Vil. The kids also enjoyed jokes and audience interaction throughout the show. Characters from movies featured in the performance were around before the concert for photos and took part in several songs as well. The symphony hopes to teach kids to appreciate music by starting out with songs they've already heard.
"They're hearing it all the time in the shows they're watching, in the games that they're playing, but they don't really realize that this is actually orchestral music. And so it's a great chance for them to hear the music that they know, and see it with characters they know but with the entire orchestra playing it," said Elizabeth Brown-Ellis, the executive director of the Lima Symphony Orchestra.

Mercy Health-St. Rita's often works closely with the symphony for programs like music therapy, so they sponsored Sunday's show as a way to give back to the musicians and the community.
"As always, at Mercy Health we like to support the arts in everything that we do. And health is not just about the body, but the mind and soul, and today is about that, being able to see all these kids see us dressed up in character," said Ann Stiles, the Community Affairs Coordinator for Mercy Health St. Rita's.
The Lima Symphony Orchestra's next concert, "Joyful, Joyful" will be on March 9th at 7:30 pm at the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center.
