Making healthier choices on Super bowl Sunday

Many people may use Super Bowl Sunday as an excuse to indulge in too much buffalo chicken dip or hot wings, but there are ways to still enjoy the day without straying from your healthy diet too much.

The National Restaurant Association estimates that 48 million Americans will order takeout or food delivery, 51.7 million cases of beer will be sold on Sunday. A local dietitian says just make sure not to skip meals earlier in the day so you don't over eat during game time. You can also exercise earlier in the day or get up and walk around during half time and time outs.

"I think it's important to have a variety of foods. Planning your plate appropriately, making sure that there are fruits and vegetables. If you're going to a party maybe you can make sure there's a safe dish there that you know is healthier, little less calories," said Becky Niekamp, a Registered Dietitian with St. Rita's Weight Management Center.

You don't need to deprive yourself completely of your favorite foods. She suggests bean dip or hummus with veggies or trail mix as something healthy to snack on.
