December 17, 2024, Press Release from Rhodes State College: Lima, OH – Rhodes State College is proud to recognize Ohio Senate President Matt Huffman (R) as the recipient of the Drs. Earl and Nancy Keese Rhodes State Community Leadership Award. This special honor celebrates individuals who go above and beyond to make a meaningful impact on the College and the community.
Senator Huffman’s dedication has been instrumental in advancing Rhodes State College’s mission to change lives, build futures and improve communities through life-long learning. Thanks to his efforts, the college secured a $440,000 one-time strategic Community Investment Fund from the State of Ohio to support the College’s Advanced Manufacturing Center. This funding is helping Rhodes State prepare students for innovative careers in advanced manufacturing.
Senator Huffman also recently championed a groundbreaking effort to change Ohio law, allowing Rhodes State to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. As one of the first three community colleges in Ohio to offer this program, Rhodes State College is now positioned to provide more opportunities for students to enter high-demand healthcare careers and improve lives across the region.
"Senator Huffman is the kind of person who gives us hope in humanity," said Rhodes State President Dr. Cynthia Spiers. "He exemplifies the belief that there are individuals who genuinely want to see others rise. His influence has been pivotal in creating pathways for students to improve themselves and their economic trajectories."
For Senator Huffman, receiving this award is a personal honor. "As a Lima native, it is truly an honor to receive the Community Leadership Award from Rhodes State," he said. "My colleagues and I in the General Assembly are working to reform the role of higher education, and Rhodes State plays a critical role in preparing our students for today’s ever-changing job market. Rhodes State is truly a 'Ready to Work' campus, and I appreciate the work they do for the students and families who call Northwest Ohio home."
