ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - Hands-on learning is better when you can help out non-profits while you are doing it.
That's what the students in Apollo Career Center's Construction Equipment Technology program had the opportunity to do this morning when they assisted Steve's Tree Care with cutting down a problematic tree at Camp Robin Rogers. The tree was close to power lines, a building, and fuel tanks, so the students learned how to do a precision drop and helped with some of the cleanup.
"When you come out here, you are learning new things and learning how to communicate with people, that like, when you are on the job site, and you are on the job you are going to have to learn how to do those things and communicate with those people. We are just learning how to do stuff in the real world,"commented Ava Trent, Apollo Career Center construction student.
"A lot of our school funding is community based and I think it really important to thank the community by helping out the people that need help," says Tanner Layman, Jr. Apollo Construction Student. "In this case Robin Rogers, they help a lot of people that are younger that need help and stuff. So just to be able to come out and give back is just amazing. It's a great feeling."
"We have a great relationship with Apollo. They have come out here for several projects, this just happens to be one, doing a tree for us that is a precarious place, with our building, and fuel tanks, and power lines," says Brad Perrott, Ex. Dir. ARC of Allen County. "So, having a project get done like this on a tight budget is a great thing for us."
The Apollo students have helped with various projects at Camp Robin Rogers including replacing a sidewalk, doing concrete work for the new restroom, and have helped take down other trees at the camp.
