The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says that bird flu may have been found in waterfowl in Auglaize and Mercer counties. They collected many dead wild birds to be tested for highly pathogenic avian flu, and they say that the virus is presumed to be found in eleven counties, including Auglaize and Mercer Counties. Canada geese, trumpeter swans, and mallards have been tested in the last few weeks.

September 25, 2024, Press Release from Ohio Northern University: Award-winning writer, artist, illustrator and naturalist David Allen Sibley will be the featured speaker for this fall’s Terry Keiser Distinguished Lectureship in the Life Sciences at Ohio Northern University. Sibley’s presentation will take place Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. The lecture will be free and open to the public.

Students from Heir Force Community School embarked on a nature hike out at Tecumseh Nature Preserve to explore the sights and sounds of Mother Nature. Following the hike, the students took part in a creativity exercise to build their own birdhouses. Park officials say they see the value in teaching students about nature and how we can not only preserve it but also learn from it and how it affects our lives.

There have been a few studies done over the years on how animals react to the eclipse, but  researchers are hoping that the April 8th event gives them more data on how animals react to a sudden change in their environment.

Students in Apollo Career Center's Construction Equipment Technology program had the opportunity to do this morning when they assisted Steve's Tree Care with cutting down a problematic tree at Camp Robin Rogers. The tree was close to power lines, a building, and fuel tanks, so the students learned how to do a precision drop and helped with some of the cleanup.

"Project FeederWatch" is run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and involves thousands of bird feeders across North America. Johnny Appleseed Parks are part of the program which uses real-time science to see what different types of birds that are using the various feeders. That data can be used to track bird populations, which could lead to other scientific discoveries.

Hans Christian Andersen's classic children's story The Ugly Duckling is adapted for the stage by Dr. Joseph Brandesky, emeritus professor of theatre. The story centers on a little duckling who discovers that the things he's been ridiculed for by others – his differences – are what makes him beautiful. Andersen’s tale about an unfortunate young bird who transforms into the envy of all creatures has been a favorite of young audiences since it was published in 1844. The resonances found in the story are still appropriate for young, and older, people today.
