LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Students with an interest in agriculture had a chance to learn about education programs and future careers.
Rhodes State College held an open house allowing area students to learn about their agriculture technology program. Students got to experience drones and mapping software hands-on to see how the emerging technology is used in their curriculum and is helping farmers make better decisions. Students also had a chance to speak with local employers in the industry to learn about possible careers. The goal is to show students the significance of agriculture in our region.
"Mostly the different technologies. It's more than just tractors and horses that people see. It's more about technology and science," said Kaden Beck, Liberty-Benton FFA.
"We hope that they take away the confidence that there are career opportunities in agriculture in this region. Ohio with our transportation, manufacturing, and proximity to water resources, we have the intellectual capabilities to really influence agriculture on a global basis," said Jim Uphaus, chair of Agriculture Technology at Rhodes State College.
The Agriculture Technology Program at Rhodes recently received over 1.1 million in grants. The funds will be used to create "Grow with Rhodes Institute" and the new "Ag Reach" program reaching into area high schools to offer credential training.
