Agriculture in Allen County represents nearly 139 million dollars of revenue a year, and 80% of the landmass in the county is agriculture. Nominations are now being accepted for the 12th induction of the Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce's Agriculture Hall of Fame. They are looking for people who meet the criteria for both producers and breeders, as well as those who are agriculturally related.

February 22, 2024 Press Release from the USDA: Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 22, 2024 – Agricultural producers who have not yet enrolled in the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs for the 2024 crop year have until March 15, 2024, to revise elections and sign contracts. Both safety net programs, delivered by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), provide vital income support to farmers who experience substantial declines in crop prices or revenues for the 2024 crop year. In Ohio, producers have completed just over 58,000 contracts to date, representing 59% of the more than 98,000 expected contracts.  Â
Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted toured Northwest Ohio to highlight innovation in the agriculture industry in Ohio. His first stop was at Celina's MVP Dairy Farm and then finished at Minster to Visit Precision Agricultural Services to learn more about the technological advances and planning used in farming to better support one of Ohio's biggest revenues of profit. On hand with the lieutenant governor was also the director of Ohio's Department of Agriculture Brian Baldridge to take in the tour as well.
The OSU Extension Office held its annual Ag Outlook Day at the Allen County Fairgrounds. A dozen speakers talked about everything from technology to the business of farming. Prices for things like fuel and fertilizers have dropped slightly from last year, but conflicts like that in the Middle East could drive those up, hurting the farmers' bottom line. Crop prices have fallen and with inflation still high, the profit margins for farmers will be tight, depending on yields.
The Van Wert County Agricultural Society has received a $35,000 grant from the Cooper Family Foundation. The Cooper Family Foundation works with organizations to provide funds for projects throughout local communities. Over the years they have provided funding to area fairgrounds, fire departments and EMTs, Boy Scouts, 4-H, FFA and schools to name only a few.
The 2024 Conservation Tillage Club breakfast program series will continue Thursday, February 8 at the Plaza Inn Restaurant in Mt. Victory. The session will start at 7:30 am with a complimentary buffet breakfast followed by an agriculture weather and climate program at 8:00 am. The final session will be held on February 22.
The Celina Fire Department was called to 3081 Carmel Church Road around 8:30 p.m. to find the milking parlor on the farm was on fire. The Chattanooga, Coldwater, Mendon, and Rockford Fire Departments were called in to help put out the blaze. The building was heavily damaged but luckily no livestock was injured or killed.
