LIMA, OH (WLIO) - If you were looking to cool down from these hot temperatures while getting in an outdoor workout, the Lima YMCA had you covered.
McPheron hopes the Y can hold this same event next year prior to their annual triathlon event.
The local Y hosted its first-ever open-water fitness swim over at the Ottawa Metro Park. Anyone from ages 14 and up was welcome to come out and tackle a swim between 500 to 1500 yards. The event allowed swimmers the opportunity to gain open water and triathlon training experience.
"Swimming in open water is a lot different. You have more obstacles than you would in a pool. It's also darker water, so you don't have that sight that you would when you have your goggles on. You got to be able to have the endurance already. You have to already be a certain level of swimmer to be able to come out here and swim 500 yards continuously without asking for help. So, it's a lot of different things. It's challenging, it's fun," explained Carla McPheron, Aquatics Director at the Lima Family YMCA.
