July 11, 2024, Press Release from the Armstrong Air & Space Museum: WAPAKONETA, OH —The Armstrong Air & Space Museum will be hosting former NASA astronaut Carl Walz as part of the 2024 Wapakoneta Summer Moon Festival on Saturday, July 20th. Walz, an Ohio-native, will make several public and private appearances throughout the day at the Armstrong Air & Space Museum and in downtown Wapakoneta. Walz, who grew up in the Cleveland area, is a well-experienced astronaut, with a total of over 230 days in space. Selected in 1990 as part of NASA’s 13th group of astronauts, Walz flew on four space flights and logged an impressive 3,620 orbits and traveled over 94,500,000 miles in space.

The Armstrong Air & Space Museum will be hosting a free public talk with former NASA astronaut Story Musgrave at the Wapakoneta Middle School auditorium on Thursday, November 10, at 7:00 pm. Dr. Musgrave is best known for being the only astronaut in history to fly aboard all five space shuttles. Dr. Musgrave also holds the honor of being NASA’s most formally educated astronaut, having earned six degrees over the course of his career. Dr. Musgrave served in the field of medicine before being accepted into the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1967 as a scientist-astronaut.

The four-day festival to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon officially starts Thursday, July 14th in Wapakoneta. During the annual event, there will be food, activities, and music either downtown Wapakoneta or out at the Armstrong Air and Space Museum. Some of the favorites have expanded for this year’s festival.

Are you ready to break a world record? Well, these kids are. 50 students in the Wapakoneta YMCA After School program from kindergarten through 5th grade gathered to put together their very own astronaut costumes in an attempt to break a world record. The current world record for this feat is currently 257 people gathered in one location. The goal of Monday afternoon's event was to bring the community together.

A special event Monday night in Wapakoneta, ahead of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

At the Auglaize County Library in Wapakoneta, people enjoyed a free presentation of "An Astronaut Wife's Life" featuring guest speaker Simone Thomas, wife of retired NASA astronaut Dr. Don Thomas.
