A $50,000 grant from T-Mobile is helping drive the redevelopment of Lima’s former Mizpah Community Center. Officials will unveil project plans during a Sunday event as local and state funding pushes the effort forward.
Registration for the Lima Noon Optimist Safety City Summer Academy opens March 27, offering a free safety education program for children ages 5 to 9. Organizers say spots fill quickly, with 12 sessions planned throughout the summer.
Jason Risner, executive director of Primrose, said the expo helps residents “age in place” by connecting them with care partners and resources. “Sometimes in order for that to happen, we have to get some care partners involved, and education and knowing about what’s available is so important to make that happen,” Risner said.
Phyllis Montrose, Child Development Resource Director for Head Start, said, "We're still not sure exactly what's going to happen, because we are a November one grant. So as soon as our grant goes through that process, and then they release the funds, we know that we will be fully operational, but at this point, you know we're going to continue it with business as usual."
The Hub at Central District is expanding its mission beyond serving just students, offering educational opportunities for people of all ages across the region.
Dr. Portia Smith, executive director of BBBS of West Central Ohio, said, “Majority of the data will go to national Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and I'm guessing that they're going to use that to also see how they can better service their agencies. But we also noticed that this is an area that we would like to really hone in on and see how we can do much better, because we have kiddos in our programs that are probably going through mental health situations, and we may not be as equipped as we thought we were.”
The St. Marys Community Public Library will be hosting several events in the coming weeks.
“We want them to actually come inside and see what's inside the building, not just the esthetics, but also the type of program and things like that that we have at Bradfield. I'm excited. And one of the things also is we're pushing our membership drive. We're trying to get our membership drive going,” said Chris Jackson, executive director of the Bradfield Community Center.
Mayor Smith emphasized the importance of collaboration in meeting residents’ needs. “So one of the things that I heard today is that if an individual signs up that lives near to Apollo, then they're referred to Apollo, but if they live near Lima City Schools, they're referred to Lima City Schools. And so it's important to have different on-ramps for services in our communities, for individuals,” she said.
