For 15 years, the school has hosted three blood drives per school year to help aid the American Red Cross and the national blood supply. The teen leadership group at LCC was instrumental in getting the blood drive set up as students went out into local neighborhoods, businesses, and schools to spread the word about the drive and get residents to step up along with the students.
January is Ohio Blood Donor Awareness Month and Solvita Blood Center held their community blood drive today at St. Rita's Medical Center. According to data, the United States is experiencing the lowest number of people giving blood in the last 20 years. Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood but only about 3% of the U.S. population is donating blood. With blood in such short supply, Solvita is happy to see locals giving the gift that keeps on giving with blood donations and helping fight the blood shortage.
The group was set up in the Elida High School gymnasium. The 6-and-a-half-hour blood drive provided the opportunity for Elida students and teachers to roll up their sleeves and help make a difference in the nationwide blood shortage.
