Following a Fourth of July holiday that saw a significant increase in fireworks-related incidents, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal reminds Ohioans of the serious risks associated with handling and setting off consumer-grade fireworks.
The Fourth of July is a time for fireworks and fun, but for pets, it can be one of the most stressful times of the year.
In the wake of a deadly home explosion over the weekend in Trumbull County involving the manufacturing of homemade fireworks, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal is warning about the dangers associated with making homemade fireworks.
While fireworks are a national tradition around this time of year, they can be dangerous when improperly handled. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that on average, 180 people are sent to the emergency room every year with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the 4th of July. Typically those injuries are burns, mostly affecting people's eyes and hands. One local physician says that it's best to just leave the fireworks to the professionals.
