LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — While Independence Day celebrations are filled with fireworks and fun for many families, they can be one of the most stressful times of the year for pets.
With numerous fireworks displays scheduled across the region over the next week, the Allen County Dog Warden is reminding pet owners to keep their dogs safely secured indoors during fireworks shows. Pet owners are also encouraged to turn on a television or music to help mask the loud noises outside.
Dogs have much more sensitive hearing than humans, making fireworks especially overwhelming. The loud noises can trigger anxiety and may even damage their hearing.
“Dogs hear four times better than humans. So, as imagine how it hurts our ears. It's really really sensitive to them. They also hear a broader spectrum of frequencies. So, little things that we may not hear, they pick up. You know, when you open up potato chip back, they can hear that. We can't necessarily. So, they can hear just so much better and it's four times louder to them,” says Julie Shellhammer, Allen County Dog Warden.
Shellhammer also reminds pet owners to make sure their dogs are wearing identification tags in case they become frightened and run away.
If a dog does escape during the holiday festivities, Shellhammer urges owners to contact the Allen County Dog Warden's Office immediately to improve the chances of a quick reunion.
