LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Ahead of 4th of July celebrations, the Lima Fire Department is expecting an increase in calls about firework displays gone wrong.

Firefighters are encouraging citizens to leave fireworks to the professionals. Those who choose to set off their own fireworks should proceed with caution and remember that misusing explosives can cause injury or death.

"Everyone likes to celebrate, especially with being 250 this year. Don't throw hot embers or hot fireworks in trash cans. Keep them away from the house. Keep it away from the kids also to just be safe," said firefighter medic and acting Lieutenant Justin Orphal.

Those choosing to set off their own fireworks should be over the age of 18, sober, and away from any buildings or crowds.
