The Allen Soil and Water Conservation District will host a native plant and rain barrel sale June 6 to encourage environmentally friendly gardening practices. The event will feature Ohio-grown native plants, educational seminars and rain barrels for purchase at the district’s Slabtown Road offices.
The Lima-Allen County Master Gardeners will host their annual plant sale Saturday at the Children’s Garden in downtown Lima. The event features perennials and flowering annuals, with proceeds benefiting the garden’s educational and community programs.

Many gardeners define a weed as any plant growing where it’s not wanted. But what one person sees as a nuisance, another may consider beneficial ground cover. Take milkweed, for example. While some view it as undesirable, others value it for supporting pollinators like monarch butterflies.
“You know what? Slow gets you there. You don't have to go out like you're doing a marathon gardening trick. Slow gets you there. Slow down, sit down, enjoy what you have planted,” said Sandra Kennedy, an Allen County Master Gardener. “This is the same to save all of us, older, aging people. You don't stop gardening when you get old, you get old when you stop gardening, and that's the truth. Think about that—be rejoice in your oldness.”
“Our Impact Day is a day that all firms across Ohio get together and we go and volunteer somewhere locally, and just to, you know, show that we're involved in our community and how much we care, and to just get our name out there,” said Cheyenne Skinner, an accounting specialist with Rea & Associates.
The USDA reports that one out of every three bites of food we eat is thanks to animal pollinators. As home gardeners, there are ways we can help provide what is needed for bees, butterflies, birds, and other pollinators to survive.
The Lima Public Library hosted its annual “Seed Swap” event to promote gardening.
