LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Allen Soil and Water Conservation District is encouraging local gardeners to support pollinators and improve environmental health as they begin planting this spring.

The district will host a native plant and rain barrel sale on Saturday, June 6, at its offices located at 1870 Slabtown Road. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon and will feature Ohio-sourced native plants provided by Stevie Carrol and Native Pathways Nursery of Williamstown, Ohio.

Plants available for purchase will include milkweed, blazing star, coneflower and indigos, along with a variety of other native species designed to benefit pollinators and local ecosystems.

“Native plants are the best for our soil, they're the best for our bugs, our pollinators, and our birds. Native plants bring all the good stuff to our gardens like they are suppose to,” said Lydia Archambo, executive director of the Allen Soil and Water Conservation District.

The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District will also present a free seminar at 9:30 a.m. focused on incorporating native plants into landscaping and explaining their environmental importance. In addition to plants, 50-gallon rain barrels will also be available for purchase during the event.
