LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Officials are warning Ohio residents that spending too much time in the ninety-degree temperatures this week could cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke. Muscle cramps, excessive sweating and dizziness are all signs to take a break and get out of the heat.

"What we suggest is frequent breaks, get plenty of hydration with electrolytes, water. If you can, get inside where there's conditioned air, where there's cold packs. Try and just stay cool," said firefighter medic and acting Lt. Justin Orphal.

Emergency officials urge outdoor workers to watch for heat exhaustion signs

Staying cool and drinking plenty of water is especially important for anyone who works outside. Construction workers, landscapers and anyone else with a job that requires them to be outside for a long period of time should be especially careful.

"And we understand that there's a duty to act and have to work, get your job done, but try to be safe about it. when they start to get to that state, past heat exhaustion to heat stroke, which is an even more critical state to where you stop sweating and your level of consciousness slowly starts to decrease," said Orphal.

Those experiencing signs of severe heat exhaustion or heat stroke should call 9-1-1 and get out of the heat.
