LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The YWCA summer camp kids spent their summer working in a vegetable garden. They sold the product of their hard work Tuesday afternoon during their kids' farmer's market.
Vegetables grown in the garden were made into various products including zucchini bread. Kids could also participate in a contest where they made their own posters to be voted on by those who came to purchase goods at the kids' farmers market, as well as some painted works.
YWCA officials say the kids got to learn the value of putting time into growing a garden and reaping the rewards of patience.
"It's just seeing their faces when the say, 'Oh, look! There's a watermelon on here! Look! There's peppers!' the excitement of when we pull the green onions, and they see the onions, and seeing what is actually at the end of the green that's on the top," said Gwenda Bevis, YWCA camp coordinator.
Camp members said that over the growing season, they've come to appreciate the value of sticking with what they've started.
"My big takeaway from this is having patience, for sure, don't doubt it even though it looks like it's not going to grow - strawberries take one or two years to grow," said Mariah Williams.
