LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is helping combat food insecurity across west central Ohio with a major donation to the West Ohio Food Bank.
The church delivered nearly 35,000 pounds of shelf-stable food Monday morning. The donation included items such as beans, macaroni and cheese, canned tomatoes and quick oats.
The church met with the West Ohio Food Bank previously to discuss how they can help the organization with their mission in the 11 county area they serve.
Food bank officials said the donation comes at a critical time as contributions have slowed in recent weeks. They say the shipment will help stock the food pantries they serve throughout the region.
“I mean this is wonderful. It's definitely a blessing. Normally when we get donations, it's not a full truck load of products. So this being a full truck load and especially of items that we don't typically get, there's flour here, there's spaghetti, there's spaghetti sauce, there's items that can actually make a meal and help with baking needs and things. So this really means a lot and I know it's going to mean a lot to our partner agencies," says Tommie Harner, CEO, West Ohio Food Bank.
Harner said the West Ohio Food Bank is exploring additional partnership opportunities with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the future to help meet the needs of local families.
