AUGLAIZE COUNTY, Ohio (WLIO) — Two Revolutionary War soldiers were honored in Auglaize County as part of the America 250 celebration.
Ancestors of William Taylor and Peter Sunderland helped place wreaths at the veterans' graves at Fort Amanda Memorial Park during a ceremony recognizing their service.
Ruth Flinn Smith and Marcie Smith were among the volunteers who helped document the locations of grave markers across the state as part of the Ohio Revolutionary War Veteran Graves Project.
A color guard played taps and presented a 21-gun salute to honor the soldiers who helped the United States gain its independence.
"We don't think about the Revolutionary War so much in Auglaize County because our county wasn't fought until 1848. And of course, uh at the time that these men moved to Logan Township, it was part of Allen County. And so we we just don't think about that being part of our immediate history. So it it's it's a lovely um way to you know touch that chapter in America's story," said Rachel Barber of the Auglaize County Historical Society. "They were just ordinary people who had jobs, had families, and they left that behind because of their principles to do what was right."
According to the project's website, about 4,000 of the state's estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War veteran grave markers have been documented so far.
