ELIDA, Ohio (WLIO) — Remote-control aircraft enthusiasts from three states gathered in Elida on Saturday for the Lima Area Radio Kontrol Society's annual Big Bird Fly-In, showcasing everything from giant-scale airplanes to high-speed jets and aerobatic helicopters.
The event featured remote-control helicopters performing aerial tricks, jet aircraft reaching speeds of up to 200 mph and a variety of model airplanes putting on demonstrations for spectators.
Organizers said interest in the remote-control aircraft hobby has continued to grow, attracting newcomers and experienced pilots alike. While the flying displays capture the audience's attention, many visitors are equally impressed by the size and detail of the aircraft on display.
“How large they are, how detailed they are. You get a lot of younger kids that are like, "Look at the pilots." You know, they like the pilots inside of them. But yeah, just the overwhelming size of some of these airplanes. And you know, of course they ask you, "What do they cost?" And the cost can be as little as $250 to $25,000. So, it just all depends on what you're into as far as the hobby goes in itself. I mean, we've got some of our 3D airplanes. They could be upwards of $10,000, $15,000 and then the jets, they'll get up as far as $20,000, $20,000 plus. it's just a cool hobby to be in. You just want to pick your lane which you want to be in,” says Ben Burden, LARKS Club chairman.
