LIMA, OH (WLIO) - They were all a buzz at the last Brown Bag Series of the season at the Allen County Children's Garden Tuesday afternoon. It was all about bees—honeybees, to be exact. Did you know that 80% of food is pollinated by managed honeybees? Honey is the only food that contains all the essential nutrients to sustain life, and one hive can make 20 to 60 pounds of honey per year. There are three types of honey bees: the drone, the worker, and the queen. All are essential parts of a successful hive. As gardeners, we can also support the honey bees.

If you’re traveling this summer, you’ll want to read up on mosquito transmitted diseases in the areas you plan to visit. According to Emily Speranza, PhD, researcher with Cleveland Clinic, diseases carried by mosquitoes can be dangerous. Travel destinations near the equator are hot spots for mosquitoes that carry viruses like dengue, Zika and chikungunya. That includes the Caribbean and South America. There are also northern mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus, the most common mosquito-borne disease in the United States. Most people recover from West Nile, but about one in 150 cases are serious and sometimes fatal, according to the CDC.
May 15, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency: COLUMBUS, OH (May 15, 2024) – Fifty-eight local health departments and municipalities across 47 Ohio counties are receiving $1,060,682 in grants from Ohio EPA for mosquito control activities, including $188,368 for the removal of scrap tires, which can become breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. The funding will help mitigate the spread of mosquito-borne viruses such as West Nile, La Crosse Encephalitis, and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
