LIMA, OH (WLIO) - They were all abuzz at the last Brown Bag Series of the season at the Allen County Children's Garden Tuesday afternoon. It was all about bees—honeybees, to be exact.
As gardeners, we can also support the honey bees.
Did you know that 80% of food is pollinated by managed honeybees? Honey is the only food that contains all the essential nutrients to sustain life, and one hive can make 20 to 60 pounds of honey per year. There are three types of honey bees: the drone, the worker, and the queen. All are essential parts of a successful hive. As gardeners, we can also support the honey bees.
The Children's Garden is located at 620 West Market Street, Lima, Ohio 45801.
"Go back to nature, natural, we believe that natural plants that are for our environment and our location are the best. Because not only the honey bees but the other insects, birds, they thrive better on natural plantings," explained Robert Woodruff, a Christian beekeeper.
A few native pollinators are milkweed, cone flowers, and goldenrod. Everyone in attendance received a small jar of honey for coming. The Allen County Master Gardeners Brown Bag Series will return next year every Tuesday, June through August, at the Children's Garden, located at 620 West Market Street, Lima, Ohio 45801.
