LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Exchange Club celebrated their 65th anniversary Thursday evening.
The Lima Exchange Club celebrates a big milestone by honoring the man that got them started. It was 60 years to the day that Lima Club formed. Charter president Jack Somerville and around 70 local residents worked to bring the Exchange Club mission to the area. Those same principals of preventing child abuse, promoting Americanism through youth programs, and actively supporting law enforcement are still at the core of what the service club still does today.
The Lima Exchange Club were also part of the police memorial service, handing out the 'Jack Somerville Award' for law officer of the year. The winner was announced as Lima Police officer Eric Mericle. He was honored because of his work with 7-year-old Maleek Nelson. Mericle helped Nelson fulfill his dream by making him an honorary police officer. The young boy suffered through some serious health conditions and Mericle was there for him every step of the way before he died in October. Mericle said he'll never forget Nelson's smile and how out-going he was.
