The Bonita L. Haynes Memorial Golf Scramble will be held Friday, July 24, to raise money for a scholarship established in honor of the Lima Correctional Institution case manager who was murdered 30 years ago. Organizers hope to award the program's 30th scholarship this year while continuing to celebrate Haynes' lasting legacy.
Councilman Derry Glenn wants residents to honor the memory of Haynes, who was a case manager at the Lima Correctional Institution and was brutally killed by two inmates on Aug. 6, 1996.
To keep her memory alive, the Lima affiliate of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ) established the Bonita Haynes Memorial Scholarship. It is funded in part by an annual golf scramble, which organizers hope will continue to grow in both participation and sponsorship to increase the amount raised.
