LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A scholarship program created in memory of a Lima Correctional Institution case manager who was murdered 30 years ago continues to honor her legacy by helping students pursue higher education.
Aug. 6 marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Bonita Haynes. Since her murder, the Bonita L. Haynes Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to deserving students, and organizers hope to present the program's 30th scholarship this year.
Funding for the scholarship comes from the annual Bonita L. Haynes Memorial Golf Scramble, which is scheduled for Friday, July 24. Organizers are encouraging golfers and community members to participate in the event to support the scholarship fund while remembering Haynes' life and legacy.
"Celebrating the legacy of Bonita L. Haynes. And so this year is special because it's the 30th year and we want to make sure that we hit that 30th scholarship given out. So I think it's only fitting and Benita and her families always smiled down on us. She's given us beautiful weather, so I'm not expecting anything different," said Kevin Jones, a member of the Lima Chapter of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice.
Jones said anyone interested in participating in the golf scramble can call 419-230-5007 for more information.
The scramble is organized by the Lima Chapter of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, Mulligans Youth Golf Program and the Smith Jones Family Foundation.
