Ohio health officials say that hospitalizations because of influenza have increased by 116%, and medical officials are also seeing the spread of norovirus across the United States. Norovirus causes predominantly nausea, vomiting, and some diarrhea; it is also highly contagious. Flu can be more serious with body aches, fever, cough, and other respiratory problems.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says that bird flu may have been found in waterfowl in Auglaize and Mercer counties. They collected many dead wild birds to be tested for highly pathogenic avian flu, and they say that the virus is presumed to be found in eleven counties, including Auglaize and Mercer Counties. Canada geese, trumpeter swans, and mallards have been tested in the last few weeks.

December 20, 2024, Press Release from OhioHealth: VAN WERT, Ohio – OhioHealth Van Wert Hospital’s Imaging Department has installed a new state-of-the-art Computed Tomography (CT) Unit to enhance diagnostic capabilities and provide high-level care close to home. The GE Revolution Ascend CT scanner was installed at Van Wert Hospital on Friday, December 20th, as part of a $1 million investment to upgrade this service for patients. It produces high quality images, making it easy for radiologists to read the scans.

Students at Shawnee Middle School are getting some interactive learning under their belts today. Thursday was the 6th annual STEM Day for 7th and 8th grade students at Shawnee. Students had the opportunity to visit with STEM professionals in the community and learn with hands-on interactive stations. The STEM activities ranged from pharmacy at Ohio Northern to EMS and paramedics from Rhodes State College and much more.

An accident at a Coldwater industrial facility lead to one person being sent to the hospital. The Coldwater Police Department says that they were called to 120 Harvest Drive in Coldwater around 10:30 Wednesday morning for an industrial accident.
