October 2, 2024, Press Release from the United States Navy: WASHINGTON (Oct. 2, 2024)- Lima, Ohio native Steven Van Dyne advanced to the rank of chief petty officer in the United States Navy Thursday, Sept. 26, during a promotion ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard. As one of just seven musicians in the United States Navy Band selected for advancement to the E-7 pay grade, Van Dyne joins an elite list of Sailors to wear the anchor collar devices that symbolize his new rank and authority. Van Dyne joined the Navy in 2016 after a successful audition as an audio engineer for the U.S. Navy Concert Band, and the completion of basic training. He is a graduate of Ohio University's Honors Tutorial College, having focused on classical music production. In 2023, Van Dyne was hand selected to fill a critical manning vacancy in the Navy’s Pacific Fleet Band and served aboard USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) as part of Pacific Partnership, the Navy’s largest annual humanitarian and disaster relief-preparedness mission in the Indo-Pacific. During the four-month deployment Van Dyne served as the leading petty officer, leading a 19-member multinational team covering 44 performances in the Philippines, Malaysia, Palau, Fiji and Tonga. While stationed aboard the ship, Van Dyne assumed other duties outside his primary audio engineer assignment, including serving as a maritime operational control watch officer.
