LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - On the day before Veterans Day, one U.S. military branch celebrates their long history of service to this country.
The Marine Corps League Detachment 1063 carried on this time-honored tradition, including using a Sabre to cut the cake and the oldest marine in attendance serving the youngest marine the first piece of cake.
Sunday afternoon, local Marines came together to celebrate the Marine Corps’ 249th birthday. The Marine Corps League Detachment 1063 carried on this time-honored tradition, including using a Sabre to cut the cake and the oldest marine in attendance serving the youngest marine the first piece of cake. Marines are bonded by the fact that when the nation calls, they are first to fight and ready to win. No matter when they served, the day they became a Marine, they joined a special brotherhood.
“Camaraderie, brotherhood, family, unity—that’s what Marines are; we are one. So, I hope the men and women that came out to celebrate with us take that away and remember we are that family and we support each other through thick and thin," says Shannon Nichols, Commandant, Marine Corps League Detachment 1063. “This is my 36th birthday as a Marine. But to know we are about to turn a corner and hit 250 is just overwhelming. It’s hard to believe that we have stayed a Corp. and stayed that strong, and I don’t see us going away anytime soon.”
The Marine Corps was formed in 1775, one year before the United States was founded.
