ST. MARYS, OHIO (WLIO) - The Ohio Army National Guard and the St. Marys community showed support for one another during a 5K run.

Saturday was the first ever St. Marys Memorial 5K walk, run, or ruck. Residents, veterans, and members of the 837th Brigade Engineer Battalion, Bravo Company, walked or ran, some even with full packs on their backs, the over 3-mile course. The event not only honors those who gave their lives in the line of duty but also the long relationship that the national guard has with the city of Saint Marys.

The event not only honors those who gave their lives in the line of duty but also the long relationship that the national guard has with the city of Saint Marys.

“They have been here since the late 1800s, and they were stationed in St. Marys for, I think, 102 years. But unfortunately, we lost them a few years ago. But that doesn’t mean that they are not involved in the community. Just to let the citizens know they are still here for us,” says Kim Reiher, Network Administrator for the City of St. Marys.

Organizers would like to continue the 5K and grow it in the future as a way to help local veterans’ organizations.
