“We're still fighting the battle of screens, whether that be a phone, tablet or a computer,” said Fred Miller Jr., president of the Wapakoneta Breakfast Optimist Club. “So we're trying to encourage the kids to stay involved in reading books. We know how much reading is a part of their education. Also, working at the library, we encourage those kids to come up and stop at the local library and also get books for the Summer Reading Challenge.”
The Lima Noon Optimist Safety City opened its doors Saturday for a special reunion event, welcoming the public and past graduates of DARE and the Safety City program, to celebrate decades of community safety education.
They are a group of dedicated students who love to sing. The Lima Senior High School "Spartanaires" performing an array of holiday classics for the Lima Noon Optimists Club this afternoon. These students come in most school days at 7 a.m. to practice and are in other choir groups including the school's masterworks class. These performers have a love for music and entertainment.
A fishing derby reeled in quite the crowd to Stadium Park in Delphos on Saturday. The derby was held by the Optimist Club Of Delphos. Anglers of all ages were welcome to sign up to participate in the event.
The Shawnee Optimist Club awarded a group of young writers at their Thursday meeting for work in a recent speech and essay contest. The categories for the contest include oratorical writing, which is designed for public speaking, while the essay category is more about storytelling. The first-place winners of each category received medals for their achievements and read their work in front of the club. The topics for both success pieces revolved around reaching your dreams and healing the world through optimism.
He has spent 13 years protecting the people of Shawnee Township and Wednesday he was recognized for his efforts. Firefighter/paramedic Joshua Hodges received the "Respect for Safety Award" from the Shawnee Optimists. He says he is grateful for the award and adds that it's a team effort when it comes to working at the fire department.
A teacher who has devoted her career toward helping kids succeed was honored Wednesday by the Shawnee Optimist Club. Shawnee high school math teacher, Sharon Metzger, was presented with the Educator of the Year Award. The Optimist Club selected her because of her dedication to students, her ability to teach math at all levels and her efforts to make sure children understand the material.
