CRIDERSVILLE, Ohio (WLIO) — A local service club is working to keep kids reading throughout the summer months.

Service club aims to curb screen time with summer book donations

Children were able to choose from a variety of popular titles, including The Bad Guys, New Kid, and When You Trap a Tiger.

The Wapakoneta Breakfast Optimist Club visited Cridersville Elementary School this week to deliver free books to students, encouraging them to stay engaged with reading over their break. Children were able to choose from a variety of popular titles, including The Bad Guys, New Kid, and When You Trap a Tiger. The club, which is dedicated to “bringing out the best in kids,” hopes the summer reading initiative will have a lasting impact.

“We're still fighting the battle of screens, whether that be a phone, tablet or a computer,” said Fred Miller Jr., president of the Wapakoneta Breakfast Optimist Club. “So we're trying to encourage the kids to stay involved in reading books. We know how much reading is a part of their education. Also, working at the library, we encourage those kids to come up and stop at the local library and also get books for the Summer Reading Challenge.”

In addition to their stop at Cridersville, the Optimists also dropped off books at Wapakoneta Elementary School last week. This marks the second year the club has provided books to local students.
