Wednesday evening, The Lima Family YMCA held a 3-hour self-defense class for women around the area led by GreyFox Defense. The class taught how to recognize potential threats and situational awareness consideration, provided hands-on techniques designed to protect from attacks and get away from a threat, as well as teaching offensive, and defensive moves both standing and when on the ground.
The "Stand Your Ground" Law goes into effect in the state of Ohio effective today. In the past, the law required a person to retreat from a hostile situation before using their firearm in self-defense. The new law now eliminates that requirement. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill changing the use of firearm policy back in January of this year.
Members of the Low Vision Coalition are taking their safety into their own hands, with the help of the Lima Police Department. “Because we don’t drive, we often are waiting on rides or waiting on a bus, or catching a ride we somebody we maybe don’t know,” said coalition member Jacob King. “People were just concerned about having self-defense issues arise."
The Lima Police Department decided to give area women the knowledge that they would need to get out of trouble in the event of an attack with the program R.A.D.
