In recognition of this month and families experiencing the unimaginable loss of a child, Lacey Hefner, a beloved associate at Lima Memorial Health System, will donate special sleep sacks to the Lima Memorial Family Birth Center.
Grand Lake Health System held their 13th annual SIDS Awareness 5K in St. Marys Saturday morning.
October 10, 2024, Press Release from by Grand Lake Health System: Helping to educate the community about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and the ways to help prevent SIDS is the main focus for the Grand Lake Health Systems annual 5K run-walk that is being held this weekend, Saturday, October 12th, at Mill Park Shelter House. When Landen Philpot passed away at less than three months of age from SIDS, his family would have no idea how his short time on Earth would help to provide education and scholarship opportunities for so many in the community. The SIDS Awareness 5K was started to honor Landen, whose father was an employee of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital at the time of Landen’s passing. Employees wanted a way to honor Landen and provide valuable education about SIDS to the community.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, approximately 3,500 infants die from sleep-related deaths in the United States every year. The updated guidelines include quite a few changes, including not using car seats, strollers, swings, and infant carriers, for routine sleep. In addition, they should avoid the use of commercial devices that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS, or other sleep-related deaths.
St. Marys Rotary made a donation Tuesday morning to help out new parents. Over 500 onesies were donated to the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital. This is a program that has been held by the Rotary Club for several years. Printed on the onesies were reminders for parents to make sure that babies are sleeping on their backs while in their cribs, which goes along with the Rotary's fight against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS.
