ST. MARYS, OHIO (WLIO) - Grand Lake Health System held their annual 5K run/walk, which was started 13 years ago in honor of an employee who lost their baby to SIDS.
Organizers are happy that the community comes out every year to support the cause.
The reason for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is unknown, but it’s the number one cause of death of babies between one month and one year old. There are ways to help prevent it, like having babies sleep on their backs on a hard mattress and alone. Organizers are happy that the community comes out every year to support the cause.
“We work really hard to market this run, to get the information out there so people can come out and join us. This is the first year that we did it in October. We use to do it in May, and we just seen numbers fall off a little bit. So, we moved it to October because October is SIDS Awareness Month, and we have had a great turnout today; we had 63 runners start with us this morning and walkers as well,” says Tracy Smith, SIDS Awareness 5K Race Director.
Along with SIDS Awareness, some of the proceeds will be used to fund 2 $1,000 nursing scholarships.
