"The impact of Neil Armstrong is still felt in our community fifty years later," said Steve Henderson, Interim Mayor of Wapakoneta. "Our residents have always grown up with this unbelievable landmark, and future generations will continue to learn about our hometown hero -- and he never wanted to be called that -- with continued inspiration."
The state of the city, county, and schools meeting was held at the Wapakoneta eagles on East Auglaize Street. Recaps on development projects in Wapakoneta as well as the county were shared with those in attendance, as well as an update on how the local school district is faring with the end of the academic calendar just around the corner.
Mayor Thomas Stinebaugh was charged with 8 counts of having an unlawful interest in a public contract, 8 counts of conflict of interest and 1 count of theft in the office just over a week ago. Attorney General Dave Yost stated that suspension proceedings would be initiated for Stinebaugh. If he were to be suspended, Council President Steve Henderson would become acting mayor. While the topic of the mayor did not come up at the meeting, we asked Henderson about how council will move forward regarding these allegations.
To prepare for the upcoming primary election, Wapakoneta High School held a public forum for two Republican candidates running for Auglaize County Commissioner to get their word out. Dave Bambauer and Steve Henderson discussed their policies on multiple county issues, including taxes, job expansion, and transportation services. This was the third debate the candidates had against each other. The two agree on many topics, especially on remodeling the county jail due to the opioid crisis.
