The Lima Community Aquatic Park is launching its spring programming with swim lessons, fitness classes and lifeguard certification courses. Officials say community feedback has been positive as they prepare to open the outdoor pool for Memorial Day weekend.

“An excellent way for us to be able to bring the kids out and partner with the Y and create this safe space for them to be able to learn valuable life skills, and, more definitively, learn how to have some fun in the water in a safe and effective way,” Heggins said.

Jared Lehman, CEO of the Lima Family YMCA, said the program offers more than exercise.

“It provides more than just a gym component and a time for them to get some exercise. It's a valuable life skill. They're learning a skill that they can take with them well beyond Air Force and as they age into adulthood,” Lehman said.

Learning to swim can be a life-changing and life-saving skill, and this week, students at Lima City Schools are getting their chance to learn. Unity Elementary 2nd graders are the first group to begin the new curriculum at Lima City Schools that offers swim lessons for students. The school district has partnered with the Lima YMCA for the pilot project. Under the program, the students will get nine total lessons. Unity Elementary physical education teacher Dominic Crea has helped the students with their lessons and says the results are promising.
