LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Family YMCA is helping kids get more comfortable in the water. This week, they're holding their "Splash" learn-to-swim safe program for children ages 3 and up.
Organizers say the program is a fun way for kids to learn basic water skills and how to be safe around water.
With summer just around the corner, the hope is the safety skills will prepare children for swimming. Although the class won't teach participants to become accomplished swimmers, the YMCA hopes they will be well equipped in case of emergencies.

"The drowning rates have gone up in the United States over the past five years. We don't know what's really leading to that, but we want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. We want to be able to promote water safety and give these kids an opportunity to pay a couple of dollars and come for five days of swim lessons," said Gray Horn, aquatics director at the Lima Family YMCA.
Registration for this week's classes is full, but if you're interested in other swim lesson opportunities, you can visit their website.
