DAYTON, Ohio (WLIO) — An Elida native was recognized on one of the biggest stages in high school sports, as Dr. Dennis Morris was honored in the OHSAA Circle of Champions during halftime of the Division VII state final at UD Arena.
Morris was one of five individuals across the state to receive the prestigious recognition, celebrating his decades-long impact as an official in both football and basketball.
On the hardwood, Morris has served as an Ohio High School Athletic Association basketball rules interpreter since 2005 and has officiated the boys state basketball finals three times in his career.
On the football field, his resume is just as impressive. Morris has officiated high school games for more than 40 years, later advancing to the Mid-American Conference in 1997. Since 2002, he has worked as a back judge in the Big Ten Conference.
Following the honor, Morris reflected on what the recognition means to him and the journey that led to it.
“It’s quite an honor to be selected. There are a lot of officials, a lot of people, and some great names, and it’s a real privilege,” Morris said. “It doesn’t seem like it’s been 50 years, but it’s been a lot of fun and a lot of opportunity. I’ve gotten to meet a lot of great people and hopefully contribute a little to high school sports.”
“I wasn’t always perfect, but I gave my best effort, and it paid off so we could have a fair playing field. That was my responsibility.”
