ELIDA, Ohio (WLIO) — St. John's Blue Jays and Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers met in the Division VII district semifinals at the Elida Fieldhouse in just their second all-time meeting — and their first since 1935.
The Tigers entered at 12-11 while the Blue Jays came in undefeated at 23-0.
Waynesfield-Goshen struck first in the opening quarter when Bentley Barnes scored the first points of the game to give the Tigers an early lead.
Moments later, Trent Faraglia sliced through the defense for two of his seven points as Waynesfield-Goshen kept things close early.
But Delphos St. John’s began to pick up momentum.
Cameron Elwer, a Furman commit, glided to the basket for the lay-in as the Blue Jays started to build separation.
Then Easton Elwer found his cousin Andrew Elwer for the bucket and the and-one. The junior finished with nine points as St. John’s continued to pull away.
Later in the half, Cameron Elwer dished to Tyce McClain, who knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead. The Blue Jays took a 28-14 advantage into the break while Waynesfield-Goshen continued to battle.
In the second half, Cameron Elwer added a historic moment.
With a basket in the fourth quarter, Elwer moved past LeBron James for eighth place on the all-time Ohio High School Athletic Association career scoring list. The senior finished with a game-high 28 points.
Delphos St. John’s cruised the rest of the way to a 65-22 victory and advances to the district final where will meet Arcadia back at the Elida Fieldhouse.
