LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — AAA expects 81 million people nationwide to hit the road this Thanksgiving.

About 3.1 million of those travelers will drive at least 50 miles in Ohio. Thanksgiving is historically the busiest holiday travel day of the year, and this year sets a new record — up 1.6 million travelers from last year. AAA expects the heaviest traffic Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, with another big wave on Sunday as people head home. Cindy Nelson from AAA Lima says most travelers will be driving again this year, and getting your car ready early can make a big difference.

AAA predicts record Thanksgiving travel in Ohio and nationwide

“One of the best things you can do is make sure you check your vehicle, check your battery, check the fluids, check your tire pressure — all those things — and get gas before you leave. That way you don’t have to mess with it the morning you’re going,” said Cindy Nelson, retail sales manager with AAA Lima.

AAA also says gas prices are slightly lower than last year.

With more people choosing to hit the road, drivers should plan ahead and expect to move slower during peak hours.
