With Memorial Day next week, the unofficial start of summer is upon us — meaning more people will travel by road and air over the coming months. According to AAA, 45.1 million people nationally and 1.7 million Ohioans will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 22 and May 26 for the holiday.

Nearly one-third of Americans are expecting to travel over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. AAA estimates that 119 million Americans will be traveling over 50 miles from home either on the road, in the air, or by rail. Motorists make up 107 million of the travelers, but airports are expecting to see the biggest increase of people over the last year, even though ticket prices are 4% higher than in 2023. But travel experts say the positioning of Christmas and New Year's during the week is giving people what they really want during the holidays: time.

Wednesday marked the first day of school for Lima City Schools, and as students across the area head back to class, safe driving in school zones is vital. Our Casey Mulcahy caught up with community leaders on the importance of back-to-school traffic safety. School is back in session for local students as summer vacation has come and gone, and back to school also means drivers will see more school buses, bikers, pedestrians walking, and student drivers on the roads. So community leaders from Lima City Schools, AAA, the Lima Police Department, and the City of Lima are teaming up to encourage motorists to drive safely and keep an eye out for students.

According to AAA, nearly 71 million travelers are expected to hit the road nationwide, making it one of the busiest holidays we've ever seen.

This week, the summer travel season kicks off, and AAA is expecting a high number of people hitting the road and the skies for Memorial Day weekend. They are predicting that nearly 44 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more this week for the holiday. That includes 1.6 million Ohioans. That is a 4% increase over last year's numbers. AAA says that this weekend could match and possibly beat the record set back in 2005, and travel experts suggest checking your car out before you leave and making sure you give yourself some extra time to get to where you are going.
