LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – To be at their best, Allen County officials prepare for the worst. The Local Emergency Planning Committee conducted a drill to test its plans for emergencies involving hazardous substances. Wednesday's scenario involved an accident that released a chemical into a waterway, which then made its way into the drinking water supply.
Representatives from various agencies worked through the drill, responding to the incident and continuing through the recovery process. Emergency management agency officials from other counties observed and provided feedback on how to improve response efforts, ensuring preparedness for any situation.

“We try to stay as up to date as possible. We did a train derailment exercise shortly after the East Palestine derailment. We try to keep on top of current trends, or if we see something that we've not tested in ourselves, we try to run a similar scenario,” said Jared Gesler, director of Allen County Homeland Security and EMA.
Allen County LEPC aims to conduct a large-scale exercise once a year to remain prepared in the event that their plans need to be put into action.
