LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – It’s Christmas in July, and the bells are ringing once again for the Lima Salvation Army.
The organization’s July Red Kettle Campaign officially kicked off Monday, with bell ringers posted at Chief Markets and Kewpee Hamburgers. The effort aims to support the Salvation Army’s mission beyond the holiday season, with funds going toward year-round programs and services.
“The needs of our mission aren’t just at Christmas, but throughout the entire year,” said Paul Downing, operations manager for the Lima Salvation Army. “We assist families and individuals with utilities, food, and summer activities for kids, among other programs.”
Downing emphasized that community support is critical to the organization’s success.
"A majority of the money we get is donations," he said. "We don't get a lot of outside funding. Don't do a lot of government funding here for that, other agencies get that. So we are pretty much reliant on the community."
Money raised during the July campaign will go directly toward helping sustain the Salvation Army’s year-round operations in Lima. Those interested in volunteering to ring the bell can contact Downing at (419) 757-4655. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through July 31.
