LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As temperatures continue to climb, doctors are reminding people to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Heat exhaustion can cause symptoms such as dizziness, heavy sweating and nausea. Health experts recommend taking frequent breaks, staying hydrated, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing and avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion should move indoors, drink fluids and cool off immediately.

Doctors say spending extended periods outdoors during extreme heat, especially while performing strenuous physical activity, can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness.

“Know what you're normally capable of, you know? This can be a big problem, for, say... people going into boot camp, or, you know, summer training camp for sports, stuff like that, if it's a level of exertion you're not used to that you're undertaking, then you're at more risk of having troubles, if you're not in great physical condition to begin with, you know, you might be more at risk,” says Dr. Corry Clinton, Family Medicine, Lima Memorial Health System.

If symptoms persist after cooling down, doctors advise seeking medical attention at your local emergency room.
