COLUMBUS, OH (WLIO) - A new Ohio law will require both drivers and passengers to provide i-d’s to law enforcement during traffic stops.
Governor Mike DeWine recently signed the legislation into law. The measure requires drivers and passengers to provide their name, address and date of birth to law enforcement if they are pulled over. Failure to comply is a misdemeanor offense that could result in a $250 fine and potential jail time.
Ohio law enforcement officials say the new law will improve officer safety during traffic stops. The legislation comes after Ohio courts found that refusing to identify oneself to law enforcement did not constitute an obstructing official business charge.
Defense attorneys say the law is an overreach, arguing that even minor traffic violations, such as a broken taillight, could lead to more serious criminal charges. The law will take effect this fall.Â
